Street Lighting Maintenance
In October of 2001, the Town of Brookline purchased 3,800 street lights from Boston Edison in order to both improve the level of service to the community and to achieve the financial benefit that will accompany Town ownership. The streetlights acquired include all those attached to the wooden utility poles and to the concrete street light poles that are commonly used in areas where utilities are buried underground. The Department of Public Works is now directly responsible for the maintenance of all public street lighting in addition to the 325 ornamental street lights that the Department has always maintained.

The Town of Brookline Department of Public Works is committed to providing a high level of service for the street lighting system. On November 1, 2004 the Town entered into a three year contract with Republic Electric Company to provide weekly outage repairs and emergency knockdown services to the street lighting system. As part of this contract Republic Electric will provide quarterly town wide outage surveys. The Department of Public Works also utilizes its staff during the night shift to report outages on a weekly basis and of course we rely on citizen input.
To report an outage please call the Department of Public Works at 617-730-2156 or 617-646-2700. Most outages will be repaired within 10 days.
