Martin Luther
King Jr. Day
The Human Relations-Youth Resources Commission has been sponsoring the annual Martin
Luther King Jr. Day celebration for the past 11 years. This program is held at the
Brookline High School auditorium on the Sunday afternoon of the MLK three-day weekend and
includes music and dance performances, a speaker, and an art and essay show featuring the
work of Brookline students. The Chair of the planning committee for the event to take
place on January 16, 2000 is Carolyne DeVore-Parks. Previous chairpeople have been Robert
McCain and Ellen Goodman. Membership on the Martin Luther King Day planning committee is

Asian American Heritage Festival
The Human Relations-Youth Resources Commission has been sponsoring the annual Asian
American Heritage Festival for the past six years. This program is held at the Brookline
High School auditorium on a Sunday afternoon in either May or June and includes music and
dance performances, an art show featuring the work of Brookline students and free
refreshments supplied by area Asian restaurants. Chairpeople of this event are Assunta Cha
and Dr. Ed Wang. Membership on the Asian American Heritage Festival planning committee is

Human Relations Youth Awards
In June of each year the Human Relations-Youth Resources Commission sponsors the
annual Human Relations Youth Awards in cooperation with the Rotary Club of Brookline. The
Commission created the awards in 1985 under the Youth Awards Committee leadership of
Stephen von Lichtenberg and is currently chaired by Leslie Fabian. There are three levels
of award: Human Relations Award and Community Service Award for special leadership,
Certificate of Merit and Letter of Commendation.
