The Town of Brookline fills vacant positions through the Massachusetts Civil
Service system as required.
Veterans
Preference is provided for appointment to Civil
Service positions to veterans as required by the Massachusetts Civil Service system.
"Veteran" shall mean any person, male or female, including a nurse, (a) whose
last discharge or release from his wartime service, as defined herein, was under honorable
conditions and who (b) served in the army, navy, marine corps, coast guard, or air force
of the United States for not less than ninety days active service, at least one day of
which was for wartime service, provided, that any person who so served in wartime and was
awarded a service-connected disability or a Purple Heart, or who died in such service
under conditions other than dishonorable, shall be deemed to be a veteran notwithstanding
his failure to complete ninety days of active service.

Police Officers and
Firefighters
Police Officers and
Firefighters are employed through the Massachusetts Civil Service system as needed after
examination and certification of candidates by the Massachusetts Human Resources Division.
The Town of Brookline utilizes the residency preference system allowed by Massachusetts
law for new hires to police officer and firefighter positions. Preference is given to
candidates who reside in Brookline for one year prior to the date of the civil service
examination.
Labor Service
Laborers in the Town of Brookline
Department of Public Works are employed as necessary, except for short periods of
emergency or seasonal employment, through the Massachusetts Civil Service system. Labor
Service positions include laborers, skilled laborers, mechanics and craftsmen. Selection
for a entry level Labor Service positions are based on registration rather than on a
written examination. Candidates are considered for employment in the order of their
registration with the Town of Brookline. If you wish to apply for a Labor Service position
