| While major retail chains seem to be sprinting up almost
everywhere, Lower Beacon Street bucks the trend. If the area could be characterized
by one place, it would be The Beacon Super Market, the oldest independent grocery store in
town. Here students, business owners, retirees, as well as medical and academic
professionals, shop side by side. Shoppers stroll extra-wide sidewalks, eat in charming outdoor cafes and funky
restaurants, and patronize eclectic specialty shops, amid classic townhouses and
impeccable apartment/condo complexes. Indeed, several of these gracious old-timers
are now guesthouses, welcome respite for weary traveler in one of the Town's most serene
spots. Lower Beacon Street is an appropriate eastern gateway to Brookline.
