J.A. Lynch Fund for Domestic Violence Education

The Domestic Violence Roundtable was founded in 1995 to provide a focus for domestic violence prevention and control activities in Brookline. The committee is chaired by Ronny Sydney, former chair of the Brookline Board of Selectman and former Brookline State Representative. The group meets monthly for educational meetings at 3:00 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month in the Community Room at the Public Safety Building, 350 Washington Street. Members are from a variety of community based organizations such as the police department, the health department, the Council on Aging, the Brookline Mental Health Center, the Human Relations/Youth Resources Commission, the Housing Authority, as well as concerned Brookline residents. The Roundtable provides an opportunity for continued education through its monthly guest speakers, as well as an opportunity for networking.

The Roundtable sponsors a monthly television show, The Safety Net, which is produced by Comcast of Brookline/Boston and is currently recorded at the Comcast studio in Cambridge. This show features various violence prevention topics and highlights community resources. The Safety Net airs on Comcast channel 12.

Safety Net programs:

The Behavior of Adolescent Males:

This episode of The Safety Net focuses on the behavior of adolescent males and females and their propensity to become batters or victims. The guests on the show are John Cooper, educator at Brookline High School, Tod Gross, PsyD, clinical psychologist in private practice in Newton, Marissa Mezzanotte, MVP Program at Northeastern University, and Dr. Carolyn Newberger, clinical psychologist and Harvard Medical School faculty member. The show highlights some of the programs that are available to adolescents in The town of Brookline, as well as some information about how to talk to adolescents about violence.

Domestic Violence and the DSS:

This episode focuses on the role of the Department of Social Services in domestic violence cases involving children. The guests of the program are Susan Howards, criminal defense attorney, Crystal Jackson, training coordinator for the domestic violence unit at the DSS, and Sondra Rudofsky from the Support Committee for Battered Women. This show highlights the programs that are available through DSS for the victims of domestic violence. The question pondered is: How do we assure victims of domestic violence that they should come forward to report abuse when they fear that their children may be taken away as a result?
