Building Dept Review:
With monies appropriated, the Health Department Building renovation started in the summer of 2005. Although completed a little behind schedule, the building – with all its new windows, walls, lights, heating and ventilation systems plus an electric solar array – is state of the art.

Dr. Alan Balsam, Director of Public Health, led the charge to get the building to be as “green” as the budget would allow. Through his tireless efforts, the building is LEED certifiable Silver, has many design and construction green components such as the floor materials, wall coverings, energy efficient equipment, lighting controls down to the bike rack. The center piece is the solar electric array mounted on the roof. Dr. Balsam was able to secure grant monies from the Mass Technology Collaborative for partial funding not only the design costs but also installation costs. Dr. Balsam also held a fund-raiser to collect the necessary funds for the array. The Building has its own generator for back-up power in the event of an electrical supply failure.

The Health Department is presently located at the old Lincoln School on Route 9. The staff is scheduled to return to the Health building on September 18, 2006.

A dedication was held on Thursday, November 2, 2006 at 6:00 p.m. Many people were on hand for this event.
