Volunteer Luncheon, April 10th 2006

The April 10th 2006 Volunteer Luncheon at the Senior Center was attended
by over 100 of the Council on Aging's 207 volunteers – the people who
keep us going at the Center and in the community.
We couldn’t do without them. Imagine our beautiful Senior Center berefit
of its volunteers. No gift cart, no librarians, no movie programs or art
exhibits, curtailed food and office services, and many fewer
performances, support groups and educational and social programs. All
these, which we sometimes take for granted, are made possible by
volunteers. And beyond the Senior Center, volunteers help elders with
shopping, library services, and as friendly visitors. It’s impossible to
overestimate their importance.
The event seemed especially significant this year as it capped the
anniversary celebrations (Brookline’s 300th and the Council on Agings’s
50th) of 2005. The annual John and Molly Dolan Volunteer Awards went to
the leaders of our two anniversary projects: Ann Berman, Miriam Sokoloff
and Jean Stringham for the beautiful Brookline 300 Quilt and Sue Reamer
for Our Brookline: Our Stories, a book of essays, poetry and photographs
by older Brookline residents. Each project involved between 50 and 60
volunteer contributors and has made a permanent legacy gift for the
Town.
New volunteer opportunities are available please contact Vivian Freeman
at 617-730-2743 to become involved at the Center.
