An Emergency Management Guide for Brookline

Police Training and Equipment

Over the last several years, the Brookline Police Department has worked aggressively with the EMT to secure grant funding for equipment and training for its’ officers. Through local funding and grant awards from the Urban Area Security Initiative’s Metro-Boston Homeland Security Region (MBHSR), the Executive Office of Public Safety and the Department of Justice COPS Office, the following trainings have been provided and equipment procured:

Trainings:
  • FEMA IS-700 course, an Introduction to the National Incident Management System (NIMS) - The Town of Brookline and the Emergency Management Team has adopted the National System of Incident Command (NIMS) and Sergeant Michael Raskin of the Brookline Police is conducting the mandatory NIMS training for all Departments town-wide. This system creates clarity about who is in command during certain situations.

  • State and Local Anti-Terrorism (SLATT)

  • Law Enforcement Response to Weapons of Mass Destruction (both Awareness and Performance Levels). This training included issuing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for every officer and preparing them to respond to a potential Hazardous Material situation.

  • FEMA ICS-100 - an Introduction to the Incident Management System

Equipment for responding to a natural or manmade disaster:

  • Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) which includes HAZMAT suits, gloves, boots and masks. This equipment will enable officers to respond to potential hazardous material incidents and play a critical role of security within the perimeter of the incident. Without this equipment, the police would be put at risk of falling victim to the material and unable to assist in the recovery efforts.

  • Chemical Resistant Uniform Jackets. This jacket is another level of protection our officers have in the event they come across a hazardous material situation.

  • Interoperable Radios for all officers

  • Equipment for CERT team members and shelter supplies
