GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Soil survey geographic database for the Town of Brookline.
SOURCE/CONVERSION METHODOLOGY
The soil survey data set is developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service.
This data set is a digital soil survey and is the most detailed level of soil geographic data developed by the National Cooperative Soil Survey. The information was collected by compiling information onto a planimetrically correct base and digitizing.
This data set consists of georeferenced digital map data and computerized attribute data. The original map data are in a 7.5 minute quadrangle format and include a detailed, field verified inventory of soils and nonsoil areas that normally occur in a repeatable pattern on the landscape and that can be cartographically shown at the scale mapped. Also included is a special soil features layer (point and line features) that displays the location of features too small to delineate at the mapping scale, but that are large enough and contrast enough with surrounding soils to significantly influence use and management. Soil map units are linked to attributes in the Map Unit Interpretations Record relational data base which gives the proportionate extent of the component soils and their properties.
A couple of the 7.5 minute quadrangles of the Soil Survey Geographic (SSURGO) data base for Norfolk and Suffolk Counties, Massachusetts, were joined and clipped to create Brookline portion of the soil survey digital data base. SSURGO depicts information about soil features on or near the surface of the Earth. The data were collected as part of the National Cooperative Soil Survey.
