SUMMER DAY CAMP INFORMATION


The Brookline Recreation Department offers three summer day camp programs to children ages 5-6, 7-9, and 10-13. Each camp provides various activities and pre-established schedules where children can build confidence, develop skills, make new friends, and have fun! Our camp gives children an experience that lasts a lifetime by providing challenging activities, under the guidance of caring, well-trained staff members.

Camp Kangaroo (ages 5-6) maintains a staff-camper ratio of 1:5; Camp Gator (ages 7-9) and Camp Express (ages 10-13) have staff-camper ratios of 1:10. These ratios allow counselors to build relationships and provides each child with the attention he or she needs. Children take part in arts & crafts, non-competitive sports & games, recreational play, and theme activities. Each camp will feature entertainment activities and field trips.

Camp Requirements:
Each child MUST live in Brookline or attend a Brookline public or private school. Your child MUST come with a snack and a lunch everyday! Lunch and snack ARE NOT provided by the Brookline Recreation Department.

Stops are not door-to-door, but are within close proximity to your home. Any child age 10 and under MUST be met at the bus stop by a parent/guardian daily. Bus routes are mailed to participants in Mid-June.




PROGRAM INFORMATION


REGISTRATION
Registration for the summer of 2008 will begin on Monday, January 28, 2008 and will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.
To register, please complete and submit a registration form by mail, fax, or in person. Registrations are also accepted online or over the phone. A $50 non-refundable deposit must accompany each registration. Splitting of sessions or pro rating of fees is not allowed.


REFUND POLICY
All refund requests must be submitted in writing to the Recreation Department on or before Monday, June 9, 2008. Refund requests are assessed a $10 administrative processing fee.

FINANCIAL AID
A confidential application can be requested. The applicant may be granted a fee reduction at the discretion of the Director and if a financial hardship exists. Please check the “scholarship” box on the registration coupon, or to request a form by mail, please call 617-739-7578. Applications must be received by April 11th, 2008 to be considered for scholarship assistance. We cannot honor any requests after this date.


FULL BALANCES WILL BE DUE BY APRIL 25, 2008, ALONG WITH THE REQUIRED HEALTH RECORDS AND REGISTRATIONS FORMS
. We suggest that you make an appointment with your child’s physician in order to obtain medical records in a timely manner. If you have not submitted these required forms, your child WILL NOT be allowed to attend camp. Please note: We do not have access to your child’s medical records at their schools or from previous summers in our camp.

L.I.T. PROGRAM (LEADER IN TRAINING)

Program Description

For mature and team-oriented teens ages 14-15 committed to developing their leadership skills and working with children. The purpose of this program is to use camp as a place for boys and girls to learn about the needs of others and the dynamics of groups. Periodic evaluations will support the L.I.T.’s in improving their interpersonal, supervisory, and leadership skills. Under the supervision of the Leader-in-Training (L.I.T.) director, L.I.T.'s assist group counselors, teach activities, and plan special events. Occasional day trips will provide opportunities to discuss camp experiences and build relationships. L.I.T.’s will be placed at Camp

The application process includes the L.I.T. application, a letter of recommendation, and a personal interview. L.I.T.’s may choose to enroll in any of the two-week sessions or the entire summer. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Are the Brookline Recreation Summer Camps licensed by the Department of Public Health?
A: Brookline Recreation Summer Camps comply with the regulations set by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (105 CMR 430) and is licensed by the Brookline Board of Public Health.

Q: How thorough is the hiring process for summer camp staff?
A: Each candidate must go through an extensive application and screening process, which includes a written application, a personal interview, three references, and checks with both the Criminal Offender Registry and the Sex Offender Registry.

Q: Do camp staff hold any certifications?
A: All camp staff are certified in American Red Cross CPR and First Aid/AED. In addition, several camp staff hold higher certifications for Water Safety Instruction, Lifeguarding, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.

Q: What should campers bring to camp?
A: Campers must bring a lunch, two snacks, a water bottle, towel, bathing suit, and wear sneakers each day.

Q: When does camp begin and end?
A: The camp day begins at 8:30am for Camp Kangaroo & Camp Gator while Camp Express starts at 9:00am. All camps end at 4:00pm.

Q: Is an option of a half-day of camp available?
A: The option of an afternoon half-day of camp is available ONLY to students registered in Project Discovery, a Brookline Public Schools summer literacy program. Participation in Project Discovery is by teacher referral only. Teachers directly contact the parents of students who are in need of summer reading support.
