THERAPEUTIC/SPECIAL OLYMPIC PROGRAMMING

 Using Yoga for Children with Special Needs

Brookline Recreation is now expanding its Therapeutic programs. below is a description of the athletic offerings currently being offered in partnership with Special Olympics. Fall 2006 will also pilot a Teen Social group for students between the age of 13—17 years old. Please contact the Recreation Department if you are interested in any of the programs listed, have interest in volunteering and assisting us grow our Therapeutic programs.

Special Olympics of Massachusetts (SOMA)- Brookline Recreation/School Chapter
Our local chapter has worked closely with SOMA, North Section, to provide a number of traning programs for Brookline children and adults. Each program is designed to assist athletes improve their physical fitness and athletic skills and ultimately prepare them for one or more local and statewide competitions per sport season. Special Olympic athletes must be at least 6 years old to train, athletes must be at least 8 years old to train and compete in the local and statewide competitions. We are currently registering athletes for the Fall sports. Training programs typically meet once per week for 1—1 ˝ hours.
To Register: Contact Kathy Jansky for more details regarding specific programs and to obtain a registration form. All athletes MUST complete a registration form prior to any participation begins with the SOMA teams.

»Unified Sports®/Unified Partners® is the fastest growing segment of SOMA. This is a very inclusive program that matches intellectually impaired athletes with similar-age volunteers to train and compete together as teammates. The Fall Soccer program is a Unified program.
»SOMA Volunteers encourage the development of SOMA athletes as coaches and event volunteers. SOMA volunteers, like our athletes, express courage, experience joy and share their gifts, skill and friendship.
