Standard First Aid Course in May

Standard First Aid – Program #2034 The Brookline Recreation Department will offer an American Red Cross Standard First Aid certification course on Monday, May 19, 2008 from 6:30 PM – 9:00 PM at the Eliot Recreation Center located at 133 Eliot Street in Chestnut Hill. The American Red Cross Standard First Aid class teaches the skills necessary to recognize and provide basic first aid care for injuries including bleeding, burns, injuries to muscles, bones and joints and sudden illnesses until advanced medical personnel arrive and take over. Participants in this course will become certified in Standard First Aid, which is valid for three years. Cost of the program is $35 for Brookline Residents and $45 for Non-Residents. Adult, Child and Infant CPR/AED Course in May

Adult, Child and Infant CPR/AED Course – Program #2036 The Brookline Recreation Department will offer an Adult, Child and Infant CPR/AED class on Thursday, May 15, 2008 and Thursday, May 22, 2008 at the Eliot Recreation Center from 6:15 PM – 9:15 PM. The purpose of this two-night course is to train individuals in the skills necessary to recognize and provide basic care for life threatening respiratory or cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants. Individuals will also be trained to care for victims of sudden cardiac arrest using an automated external defibrillator (AED) until advanced medical personnel arrive. Participants will become certified in Adult, Child and Infant CPR/AED for 1 year. Cost of the program is $50 for Brookline Residents and $60 for Non-Residents. Brookline Flag Day Road Race

Brookline Flag Day Road Race It's coming - June 15, 2008! It's the Brookline Flag Day 5K Road Race - and, it's going to be spectacular. The Road Race is a scenic race through residential and small business communities of Brookline. The Flag Day 5K is certified (MA06004JK) by the USA Track & Field, will offer chip timing, and traffic control will be provided by the Brookline Police Department. Awards will be presented to 1st Place Male Overall Winner, 1st Place Female Overall Winner, and top 2 competitors in each division. Competitive Divisions: Male & Female: 10 & Under (Mini Race), 10 & Under (5K) Male & Female: 11-17, 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60+ Race Information: The race will begin at 10:30 AM starting from Brookline High School (115 Greenough Street, Brookline MA 02445), corner of Greenough St., and Davis Ave., to Cypress St., to Washington St., to Harvard St., to Brookline Allston line, return same route, and end at Brookline High School. Olmsted Park Volunteer Project

Olmsted Park Volunteer Project Have a little spring fever? Here is your chance to get outside, meet new people and lend a helping hand. No experience or tools necessary. This volunteer effort is a collaboration of High Street Hill Association’s Friends of Leverett Pond, Brookline GreenSpace Alliance, and the Brookline Parks & Open Space Division. Saturday, April 26th Celebrate Earth Day and Frederick Law Olmsted’s Birthday at our Volunteer Kick Off! 9:00 am: Walking Tour of the Muddy River (down to Park Drive and back) led by Hugh Mattison. Family Fun Days – The parks are coming alive with the signs of spring! What better time to participate in games and activities with your family? Exercise, exploration and education in Brookline’s parks! Check in will begin at 10:00 a.m. and events will last approximately 2 hours. $25 one time fee per family/couple. Summer Nature Camps

Summer Nature Camps – The Town of Brookline offers summer nature camps that emphasize hands-on experiential learning in the Town’s parks and sanctuaries. Registration is available online at http://www.townofbrooklinemass.com/recreation/ or by calling 617-730-2076. Little Acorns Young naturalists can explore the natural areas of Brookline this summer. Little acorns will have the opportunity to visit many of Brookline's parks and sanctuaries, and unravel the mysteries of the natural world through hands-on exploration, stories, arts & crafts, nature walks, and games. We will focus on local wildlife and their habitats. Each day will feature a different theme and a new location for campers to enjoy. Nature Camp is designed to encourage children to discover, enjoy and respect nature through personal experiences. June 30 - July 11, 2008 (2 week session, no camp July 4th) 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Location: Soule Recreation Center Ages 5-6 $450 Sprouts This older group of naturalists will explore Brookline, focusing on the native plant life and varied habitats found in our natural areas. Sprouts will have the opportunity to visit many of Brookline's parks and sanctuaries, and discover the growth cycle through hands-on exploration, stories, arts & crafts, nature walks, and games. Campers will also participate in the maintenance and harvesting of our community garden. Each day will feature a different theme and new location for campers to enjoy. Nature Camp is designed to encourage children to discover, enjoy and respect nature through personal experiences. July 14 - July 25, 2008 (2 week session) 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Location: Soule Recreation Center Ages 7-8 $500 Junior Rangers At Junior Ranger camp, children will experience nature based learning in the outdoors as they work towards earning a Junior Ranger badge. Campers will learn about nature and the environment through hands-on exploration, orienteering, arts & crafts, nature walks and group activities. While visiting Brookline's extraordinary parks and sanctuaries, campers will be introduced to many different environmental topics including: wildlife, habitats, ecology, biodiversity, and conservation. The Junior Ranger Camp will provide young people with a unique learning experience while encouraging stewardship of our natural areas. This program emphasizes hands-on, field-based, experiential learning, and includes daily excursions. July 28 - August 8, 2008 (2 week session) 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Location: Soule Recreation Center Ages 9-10 $500 Adventurers For the more adventurous spirit, this program will begin with explorations in Brookline and then move beyond the town's boundaries. Our oldest group of naturalists will expand their knowledge as they practice identification, orienteering and outdoor living skills. Excursions will include hikes, canoeing, tide pooling and a two-night overnight. This program emphasizes hands-on, field-based, experiential learning and aims to foster stewardship. Choose to participate in a one-week session, or enroll for two weeks. 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Location: Soule Recreation Center Ages 11-13 $400 per 1 week session Session I: August 11 - August 15 (1 week session) Session II: August 18 - August 22 (1 week session)

Nature Explorations - Summer Session

Nature Explorations – Summer Session This is an extended version of our popular year-round Nature Explorations program! All explorers ages 2-5 are invited to discover nature through stories, crafts, activities and hikes in Brookline's parks and sanctuaries. Nature Explorations will encourage and cultivate your child’s interest in the environment through first-hand experiences, while developing his/ her skills in observation, classification, counting and investigation. Directions and locations will be mailed out after registration. Choose from two sessions this summer: 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for ages 2-4 or 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. for ages 4-5. June 23 – June 27. $100 per adult/child pair. Space is limited to ten children. Backpack babies are welcome to attend at no additional cost. 2008 Summer Day Camp Registration

2008 SUMMER DAY CAMP www.townofbrooklinemass.com/recreation The Brookline Recreation Department offers three summer day camp programs to children ages 5-6, 7-9, and 10-13. Camp runs from June 30th – August 15th. Each camp provides various activities and pre-established schedules where children can build confidence, develop skills, make new friends, and have fun! Our camp gives children an experience that lasts a lifetime by providing challenging activities, under the guidance of caring, well-trained staff members. Camp Kangaroo (ages 5-6) maintains a staff-camper ratio of 1:5; Camp Gator (ages 7-9) and Camp Express (ages 10-13) have staff-camper ratios of 1:10. These ratios allow counselors to build relationships and provides each child with the attention he or she needs. Children take part in arts & crafts, non-competitive sports & games, aquatics activities, recreational play, and theme activities. Each camp will feature entertainment activities and field trips. Camp Requirements: Each child MUST live in Brookline or attend a Brookline public or private school. Your child MUST come with a snack and a lunch everyday! Lunch and snack ARE NOT provided by the Brookline Recreation Department. Registration for the summer of 2008 began on January 28, 2008 and spaces are filling up quickly! To register, please complete and submit a registration form by mail, fax, or in person. Registrations are also accepted online or over the phone. A $50 non-refundable deposit must accompany each registration. Registrations are accepted until each session reaches its capacity. Once capacity is reached, we will begin a waiting list. A confidential scholarship application can be requested and approved by the Director of Recreation if a financial hardship exists. The Recreation Department Camp program abides by the rules of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and is licensed by the Brookline Health Department.
