The Brookline Department of Public Works, in cooperation
with the League of Women Voters of Brookline and the Solid Waste Advisory
Committee, will sponsor a Household Hazardous Products Collection Day on
Saturday, May 3rd, 2008 from 9 AM to 2 PM at the DPW Transfer Station, 815
Newton Street (follow signs from Hammond Street). To respect the
community’s religious obligations and observations, this event alternates
between Saturday and Sunday. This year it falls on a Saturday.
Licensed hazardous waste haulers from Veolia Environmental Services, Inc.
will be on hand to identify, package and safely dispose of toxic products.
Please bring the following products to the event:
Household alkaline batteries made after 1994 do not contain mercury,
and may be disposed of in the trash!!
What to bring:
E-Waste Material Accepted: Computers, monitors, televisions
(including big screen and wood consoles), LCD/flat panels, printers,
copiers, and other computer related equipment, stereos, cell and other
phones, power supplies, cords, electronic games, VCRs, circuit boards, and
other household electronic devices.
Rechargeable batteries are hazardous and should be brought to the event.
Pesticides and rodent poisons
paint thinner
urethanes
oil or enamel based paints
weed killers and fertilizers
cleaning solvents & caustic cleaners
photo chemicals
antifreeze
kerosene
diesel & waste motor oil
partially filled aerosol cans **(Empty aerosol cans may be recycled
curbside.)
auto and household batteries ** (please read household battery statement
below)
fluorescent bulbs
auto tires (ok if on rims)
propane tanks
What not to bring:
No Commercial Hazardous waste !!!
Radioactive waste, including smoke detectors
explosives
gunpowder
flares, ammunition
PCB oils
bulk chemicals
oil in large drums
asbestos
medical/biological waste including sharps
Latex paints (Dry latex paint can be put in the trash. To dry small
amounts, remove the lid and let the paint dry in the can. For larger
amounts, mix in kitty litter or pour one-inch layers of paint in a
cardboard box lined with a plastic bag. Hardened oil-based paint can also
be disposed of in the trash.)

Please carpool to this event whenever possible, and remember to ask your
neighbors, friends, or family if there are any products you could bring
for them. It is very important to follow the guidelines about which
products are acceptable. Let’s help make this a successful event!
Rain Barrels are being offered by New England Rain Barrel Company. The
Retail cost is $85 but for a limited time they may be purchased for $70.
The company will be on hand between 9 and 12 to deliver these barrels the
day of the event. Contact

The Solid Waste Advisory Committee will be selling home compost bins for a
discounted price ($35). Please note that Brookline residency is required
and will be checked at the gate. Please bring a driver’s license or other
